Telefunken M82: modern sounding bass drum microphone

In today's article I will introduce you to the Telefunken M82 microphone. The M82 is a dynamic microphone designed for bass drum and bass cabinet recording . Very stylish matte finish with front logo, the capsule is directed on the top, it is also written on the sides "end address" to indicate the placement of the capsule.

Technical features of the Telefunken M82

The M82 has 2 switches for sound control and thus 4 possible combinations.

One switch called "Kick EQ," which acts as a mid-cut going to dig the sound on 300-400 Hz , while the other switch, called HIGH BOOST, boosts the high frequencies on 4-5 kHz.

This makes for a very versatile use of the microphone and the ability to get a great drum sound without too intrusive post-equalization.

I listened to how the Telefunken M82performs on kick drum also going to compare it with the Shure Beta 52A.

The result is very surprising, a bass drum that, already with flat position of the switches, is very full-bodied and rich in low frequencies; with the switch on the high frequencies we manage to bring out the tip of the bass drum very well and, as a result, already have a very good sound in recording.

I really appreciated the switch for cutting on the mid frequencies to get a more modern speaker with "scooped " sounds and, thus, avoid the annoying boxy effect.

Comparing it with the Shure Beta52a, which is a very respectable and excellent microphone for its use, I noticed that they are very similar in some respects, but have the belly and tip frequencies positioned in different ranges: I appreciated the Telefunken much more, because it has a much more pronounced extension on the very low frequencies, which is also useful from Subkick.
