Rupert Neve Designs Newton Channel: perfect recordings in a few clicks

Published on 06/11/2024

The Newton Channel is a channel strip consisting of the primary microphone preamp section, which also accepts line signals thanks to the combo connection on the back, with a gain that goes up to +72 dB and a handy TRIM potentiometer so that the output volume can be adjusted.

Consequently, it is very interesting to use the newton to saturate line signals with high preamp gain settings and attenuate with the TRIM.

When tracking, the HPF pot allows us to clean the recording of any rumble or perhaps microphone pop effects, maintaining a clean signal without unwanted peaks by applying a high-pass filter from 20 to 250 Hz continuously.

Equalization, compression and texture section

To speed up the mixing stages, it is very useful to record directly with equalization applied. The Newton Channel has 3 EQ bands, two beautiful Shelfs, with which you can give robustness or brightness to your recordings, and a variable mid-band from 220 Hz to 7 kHz, with a remarkable cut/boost range for all three bands of -/+ 12 dB.

The compression section incorporates a very smooth VCA with fixed attack, while the release is continuously variable to best match the response to the processed signal. Also very useful is the make-up gain to level the output volume.

Again, very interesting is the possibility to place the compressor before or after the equalizer via the appropriate button.

The last section is called Texture and allows us to add harmonics to the signal.

We can choose two settings via the SILK control. SILK, in blue color, will saturate the low and mid frequencies more, while SILK, in red color, will affect the mid-high frequencies making the Newton Channel a very versatile machine.

A key feature of the Newton Channel is the possibility of using anattenuated output of -6 dB so as to push the machine more, perhaps with a more extreme and colorful setting, while still maintaining a volume below the digital clip. Simultaneous recording of attenuated output and normal output is always possible.

As always, I invite you to watch our YouTube video to view all the features and technical specifications of the Rupert Neve Newton Channel. If, on the other hand, you would like to experience the Newton Channel in person, all you have to do is drop by the Milk Audio Store and Showroom.
