L’U89 è un microfono da studio adatto a qualsiasi tipo di impiego. La griglia protegge una capsula a doppio diaframma che tramite selettore rotativo a 5 posizioni permette di scegliere tra altrettante configurazioni polari. Inoltre il microfono può facilmente essere usato per riprese di sorgenti sonore ampie, ad emissione laterale o a grandi distanza. L’amplificatore permette di lavorare senza distorsione con pressioni sonore di ben 134 dB ma configurabile per accettarne addirittura di 140 dB. Un ulteriore switch attiva un filtro che cambia la risposta in frequenza sotto gli 80 Hz e  i 160 Hz. Richiede sospensione opzionale EA87.
