PMC 6: Studio Monitors for Dolby Atmos®

Published on 13/11/2024

Today I want to introduce you to the fantastic PMC 6. The PMC-6 are the smallest studio monitor speakers in the range that PMC currently offers.

We are talking about a monitor speaker with only a 6-inch woofer, but that should not scare you because the PMC 6 is a nearfield monitor speaker with outstanding performance. Let's start with the technical data and then delve into the sound performance and my personal feelings.

Technical specifications of the PMC 6 monitor speakers

The PMC 6 are 2-way active speakers with ATL technology , an acronym that stands for "Advanced Transmission Line," but we will look at that in a moment.

The woofer is 6 inches with a dedicated 200W class D amplifier , while the soft dome tweeter is 1 inch and also amplified by a 200W rms class D amplifier .

Frequency response ranges from 39 Hz to 25 kHz, with a peak SPL of 118 dB and a continuous SPL of 108 dB.

ATL technology

At the front we also find the so-called bass reflex, and this is where ATL technology together with PMC's proprietary Laminar technology intervenes. It is a bit complicated to explain because it requires knowledge of wavelengths, resonances and also fluid dynamics.

My previous studies in power engineering have given me a thorough understanding of everything behind the engineering of PMC monitors, especially for fluid dynamics.

To make a long story short, the woofer has an excursion of as much as 2 cm, and inside it the speaker is tunneled. A fairly long path inside it and completely covered with sound-absorbing material that works on the mid to high frequencies.

So the air, and also the harmonic content, is pushed from both the woofer and the tweeter (obviously more so from the woofer) along this path, and the sound-absorbing material allows high and mid frequencies to be attenuated, keeping only the low frequencies.

And that's ATL technology in a nutshell, I've made it very simple but believe me there is a very thorough and technical study behind it.

Laminar technology

Unlike all other monitors, the bass reflex has a honeycomb grid, this geometry is extended inside the monitor thus creating channels.

In this way, air is expelled from the monitor in a "Laminar" manner precisely, so in an orderly manner to make it simple and not in a turbulent manner and moreover in phase with the woofer.

Summing up, these two technologies make it possible to extend the reproduction of low frequencies and achieve lows that only 8- or 10-inch monitors could reproduce.

The rear panel

Moving to the rear panel we have at the top an LCD with two encoders that are useful for fully managing the monitor.

Then we have an input connection that can be switched between analog or digital, a digital output, an expansion panel for future connections, and an RJ45 Ethernet jack, for managing the monitor remotely.

Final evaluations on the PMC 6 studio monitors

We now come to my impressions, which are definitely super positive. The ATL and Laminar technology work great, I could detect very presentlow frequencies, not accentuated, mind you I am talking about presence, that is I can hear very low frequencies therefore very extended, while monitoring with 6 inch monitors.

The high frequencies are cool but not annoying and the mid frequencies are fantastic; but I don't want to dwell on the reproduction of the frequencies alone, whether it is faithful or not, because the main feeling I had is that of spatiality.

Being monitors also designed for Dolby Atmos, they have an indescribable depth of sound: it is as if, just by having two monitors placed frontally, the perception is that of receiving the sound at 360°, super enveloping and immersive thanks, however, also to the wider sound diffusion of the PMC 6.

I can distinguish all the instruments very well and the voice has its own position very useful in the mix.
