Gainlab Audio EMPRESS - Valve Equalizer for Mixing and Mastering

Published on 23/10/2024

TheEMPRESS is an analog tube equalizer with a very warm and smooth character;

built on the basis of the famous Pultec EQP-1, it boasts interesting features. For those familiar with the Pultec it is divided into 3 separate machines that work on different frequencies. The EMPRESS practically merges all 3 machines with the addition of modern controls.

The technical features of the Gainlab Audio EMPRESS.

The Gainlab Audio EMPRESS is a stereo equalizer so with two identical channels, divided into 3 sections, low, mid and high frequencies.

Very interesting though is the ability to change the mode of the Low Frequency Boost and the High Frequency Cut between Normal and Shift. In the video I showed you them right away, because it is very interesting and very useful to avoid the booming effect on low or high frequencies, which is annoying while still boosting many db.

Another interesting feature of the EMPRESS is the Tube Boost i.e., a tube saturation boost that increases the volume a bit, but definitely increases the harmonic content, giving smoothness and warmth, which is fantastic when mastering.

Unlike the Pultec which is fixed with shelvingtype shape , here we can also switch to "bell" for mid-high frequencies then, with more focused equalizations with bell shape, very useful to intervene on specific frequencies to emphasize some instruments.

In the YouTube video I showed you how the machine acts with tube boost: you can hear a small bump in volume, but the sound is slightly more full-bodied.

I hope I have been comprehensive and given you an understanding of how GainLab Audio's EMPRESS works.
