The Tierra Audio Gravity is a VCA-type stereo compressor, Voltage Controlled Amplifier, perhaps the most versatile type of compressor due to its ability to run in both slow and more reactive modes, with very fast attacks and releases.
It is assembled completely by hand to minimize electronic friction and improve the thermal response of the equipment, thus also avoiding background noise.
Inside we find high-end components such as the original Triad Magnetics® transformer to power the power stage, thus providing a more stable, precise and durable result that does not generate any kind of noise.
Thanks to the transformer we will notice a very warm and smooth sound result even without using too much compression, but only by running the signal through the Gravity.
The front panel is covered with a layer of high quality cherry wood, entirely laser engraved, achieving a result that is certainly very neat and precise.
As controls we find Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release and Make Up Gain, adjacent we find switches for bypass and high-pass filter to exclude low frequencies when we are going to compress.
There is also a nice VU Meter to monitor Gain Reduction, it lights up white like the power button.
The Threshold and Make up gain potentiometer are de-clicked while Ratio, Attack and Release work in steps.
If we take a detailed look at Attack and Release we will notice a nice way of representing the speed of use of the machine, through a turtle symbol on slower settings and a bunny rabbit on faster settings.
Speaking of the rear panel we find the stereo connections exclusively with XLR-typeconnectors with gold-plated pins.
I tested how the Tierra Audio Gravity performs on different instruments such as acousticguitar, drums, vocals, mixbus, piano and strings.
The Tierra Audio compressor turns out to be very versatile thanks to its VCA feature, so very fast, suitable for vocal recording also spoken as in podcast and dubbing sessions; it has a very warm feature thanks to its transformer, very interesting to increase the harmonic content and give spatiality to your mixes.
I really appreciated the switch to exclude low frequencies from compression, so you can avoid that flooded effect and get more smoothness even at high compressions. For more I refer you, as always, to the YouTube video!
