Genelec 8020D: Small Studio Monitors with Precise Sound

Published on 30/04/2024

Features and technical specifications of the D version of the Genelec 8020 monitors

The D version of the Genelec 8020D monitors, the latest on the market, boasts an even higher SPL of as much as 100 dB and lower power consumption than previous versions. Designed to fit the widest possible range of listening environments, the Genelec 8020D performs best when space is limited.

Their small dimensions of not even 25 cm in height including its built-in stand make these small monitors super versatile in placement and incredibly accurate in sound reproduction.

Sweet spot and DCW technology

Genelec 8020D studio monitors offer a wide sweet spot that maintains a neutral, uncolored sound. Frequency response graphs show a slight attenuation of high frequencies as the angle increases, compared to the central sweet spot.

Despite this, the sound quality remains constant, allowing freedom of movement within the mixing room. This feature is made possible by Genelec's DCW (Directivity Control Waveguide) technology, which also contributes to improved stereo imaging.

Energy saving with ISS™

Genelec 8020D monitors are also equipped with a circuit called Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS™), which detects monitor inactivity and automatically places the monitor in standby mode to reduce power consumption.

This feature can be turned on or off through the DSPs located on the back of the monitor, which also offer the ability to customize the monitors' sound response to suit your needs.

A studio monitor with a compact size

Despite their compact size and a woofer of only 4 inches driven by a dedicated 50W Class D amplifier, along with a ¾-inch metal dome tweeter also supported by a 50W Class D amplifier, the Genelec 8020D monitors offer excellent frequency response.

This sound quality makes them competitive even with 8-inch consumer-range speakers, proving that small size does not necessarily mean compromise on audio performance.

Bass reflex and sleek design

Thanks in part to the bass reflex positioned at the rear, we have a very clean and elegant front panel. But at the same time an extension of low frequencies that ensures precision even though the size is small.

Final evaluation of the Genelec 8020D monitors

As for our personal impressions, we were particularly impressed by the low frequency extension, which is remarkable for a cone of only 4 inches. The monitors appear very balanced and accurate.

The high frequencies, while bright, are not fatiguing even during long listening and mixing sessions. This combination makes the Genelec 8020Ds exceptionally versatile and enjoyable to use.

Those accustomed to 3-way monitors may perceive some deficiency in the mid-range. Indeed, the sound may appear slightly hollow in the mid-range, but this is a common phenomenon in 2-way monitors.
