RND introduces the Newton Channel

Published on 12/06/2023

Newton Channel is a modern channel strip built also with an eye to tradition.

Its intuitive design offers a classic, recognizable sound as well as the sound shaping capabilities inherent in RND’s products.

Newton Channel is suitable for all recording studios and can be used both in the studio and live.

Its name is inspired by Rupert's birthplace, Newton Abbot, in England, and reflects the sonic journey of his life: from traditional to modern, with everything in between.

It is an extremely versatile channel strip capable of enhancing any sound source with the typical classic sound of Rupert Neve Designs.

The Newton Channel includes a Class-A mic preamp, a discreet and musical 3-band EQ section, a fast and flexible VCA compressor, and transformer-coupled outputs exclusive to Rupert Neve Designs.

It is obviously available also the variable Silk Red & Blue harmonic generation circuit.

The preamp

The mic preamp makes it easy to create a crisp, clean and detailed sound. With 72dB of gain, including 6dB of fine trim control, it's ideal for a wide range of sources.

The input stage is designed to match the impedances of normal microphone sources and can also handle line levels, making it possible to use the Newton even in the mix phase.

The Newton also includes a variable high-pass filter (with a wide frequency adjustment range and an independent bypass switch) that allows you to quickly eliminate unwanted noise, resonances or other low frequencies in the source signal.

The equalizer

The EQ section of the Newton is designed to offer speed and flexibility with simplified controls.

The low and high frequency bands can be fine-tuned via 31-step potentiometers, allowing for gain boosts or cuts of up to 12dB.

You can switch between gentle and extreme settings as needed.

The Newton's parametric mid-band EQ includes another 31-step potentiometer and a wide mid-range, adjustable between 220 Hz and 7 KHz.

This makes the mid-frequency band particularly flexible, allowing you to reduce unwanted frequencies in the low-mid range, boost the mid-range presence, or roll down the high-mid frequencies.

As with each section of the Newton Channel, the EQ also features an independent bypass button.

The VCA compressor

The Newton Channel also includes the latest version of Rupert Neve Designs' VCA compressor, with a +20dB make-up gain and a large control to adjust the desired amount of compression while maintaining the sound.

There is also a "pre EQ/post EQ" switch to place the compressor before or after the EQ section, as well as an independent bypass button.

The output stage and the Silk circuit

At the end of the Newton's signal path is Silk's exclusive variable circuit, which allows the 2nd and 3rd harmonics to be amplified through Rupert Neve Designs' custom output transformers, creating a vintage sound.

With the adjustable Texture knob, you can precisely select the desired harmonic density.

The Silk Red mode accentuates the harmonics in the high-mid and high-mid frequencies, while the Blue mode emphasizes the harmonics in the low-mid and low-mid frequencies.

With the Silk/Texture circuit engaged, the Newton's output stage manages to enrich every track, imparting more power and brilliance.

The Newton Channel features a custom transformer balanced line output stage. In addition, there is a -6 dBu XLR output which allows you to compensate for high input levels and Silk harmonic saturation.

This allows you to make the most of the transformer's harmonics without distorting the next device in the signal chain.

Both outputs are active and can be used simultaneously.
